Designing an Effective & Energy-Efficient Data Center

The proprietary combination of slotted and threaded Aluminum Extrusion profiles has proven incredibly versatile for containment ceiling panels, vertical panels, containment walls, doors and more.

Aisle Containment Systems to Reduce Energy Costs

Active Data Centers run extremely hot. With so many servers producing heat, temperatures in Data Centers rise very quickly. To keep Server Farms running efficiently, hot and cold air must not mix between aisles, regardless of rack configuration and other design challenges. If unchecked, severe hardware damage can occur that may not be repairable. However, keeping optimal temperatures is expensive, forcing data center professionals to implement energy-saving solutions.

In order to meet this demand, PennAir provides Aluminum Extrusion designed for Aisle Containment Systems, which improves the airflow efficiency that is delivered to server equipment. This greatly decreases operational costs.

What is Aisle Containment?

Separating Hot & Cold Air

Aisle Containment is a physical barrier that completely separates the cold supply airflow from the hot air being discharged from the servers. Using Aluminum Extrusion, a partition is created to isolate either the server supply air (Cold Aisle Containment or CAC) or the exhaust air (Hot Aisle Containment or HAC). This prevents the supply and exhaust air from mixing with Aisle Containment, and significantly increases energy savings.

Depending on the facility’s layout, a Hot or Cold Containment System could yield the best results.

Why is Aisle Containment Important?

Avoid damage caused by overheating & save on utility bills

Aisle Containment is an important environmental control standard for the Server Farm industry because it decreases the risk of servers and other sensitive electronics from overheating and becoming damaged, saving thousands of dollars in energy costs each year. With a proper containment system in place the temperature in the facility becomes uniform and predictable

The worst enemy of a Data Center is a non-monitored, poorly designed system, without sufficient Aisle Containment.

Hot vs Cold Aisle Containment System

Which one is best for your data center?

Hot Aisle and Cold Aisle Containment Data Center design both require that server racks are lined in rows with the cold air intakes facing one direction and hot air exhaust facing the other direction. This makes one side of the row hot and the other side cold. The Containment Systems are used to trap either the hot or cold air, and dispose of it in a way that does not allow the two air temperatures to mix.

The Cool Side of Aluminum Extrusion

Ideal for Hot or Cold Aisle Containment Systems

Extruded Aluminum is the framework of any Aisle Containment System. The proprietary combination of slotted and threaded sides has proven incredibly versatile for containment ceiling panels, vertical panels, containment walls, doors and more.

PennAir provides T-slot Aluminum profiles, or bars, that are modular in design making it the perfect solution for Containment Systems.

Thermal Conductors

Aluminum conducts heat and cold better than other common metals, making extrusion ideal for applications requiring heat exchangers or heat dissipation.

Easy Assembly

With it’s modular design, all that is needed are simple hand tools — no welding required. T-slot profiles are strong and modular and adjustments and assembly are straightforward and fast.

Corrosion Resistant

Aluminum Extrusion offers excellent corrosion resistance. It does not rust, and the aluminum surface is protected by its own naturally occurring oxide profile.

Resilient

Aluminum combines strength with flexibility and can flex under loads, or spring back from the shock of impact, which is why extruded components are used in automotive crash management systems.

Sustainable

Aluminum is recyclable, with no degradation in properties. Aluminum Extrusions are often produced with a high recycled content — without compromise to aesthetics or functionality.

Easily Tailored

While there are a variety of standard extrusion profiles available, the ability to design a profile to meet specific functional, aesthetic, and manufacturability objectives, makes Aluminum Extrusion a preferred element in many product solutions.

Non-Magnetic & Lightweight

As aluminum will not acquire a magnetic charge, extrusions are useful in high-voltage applications and in electronics, where magnetic fields come into play. Aluminum is about 1/3 the weight of steel, iron, brass, and copper.

Non-Combustible & Non-Toxic

Aluminum does not burn and even at extremely high temperatures does not produce toxic fumes.
